What is Krav Maga?
In short, it is a hand to hand combat system originally developed in the 1930’s by Imi Lichtenfeld, as a response to anti-Semitic violence. It is used by the Israeli military and has been adapted for civilian use. Its purpose is not sport, but to engage a violent real-life threat in the most practical and efficient manner possible. It focuses on aggression, simultaneous offense and defense, and target acquisition. Elements include deescalation, striking, grappling, and defense/disarms against various weapons. At its core, Krav Maga is meant to be simple and easy to learn. One of Lichtenfeld’s goals was to ensure that people of all sizes and strengths, male or female, would be able to utilize his methods of self defense to protect themselves… “So that one may walk in peace.”
Others have continued to develop the original Krav Maga curriculum. From the original group, other organizations have spread across the world, teaching Krav Maga techniques and principles to civilians, police officers, military personnel, and security details.
Do I need to be “in shape” before I start?
No. Violent encounters may happen at any time. They won’t wait for your peak fitness. The goal of our program is to meet you where you’re at, give you practical ways to defend yourself in the short term, then as you gain more knowledge and increase your fitness level, we will build on those abilities. If you are already exercising regularly, we will challenge your fitness as you gain knowledge of combat tactics.
What equipment will I need?
For your first class, wear comfortable workout clothes and bring a water bottle. Once you sign up, you’ll want to purchase a pair of open hand Krav/MMA style gloves. You are welcome to find your own, or purchase what we have in stock. Higher level practitioners will want to invest in additional protective gear for sparring sessions and stress drills.
Can I do Taekwondo AND Krav Maga?
Absolutely! We believe that these two arts complement each other very well. Each one requires discipline and technique, and each class reinforces the skill, mobility, and coordination needed to perform at your highest level. Not to mention that double the classes means double the fun!
Great! How do I get started?
Give us a call so we know to look for you and we can answer any additional questions you may have. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early for your first class. That gives us time to meet you, explain the class format, and let you warm up. You are welcome to drop in for any scheduled class, but we love hearing from people ahead of time.
